Domain transfer FAQs
Why can’t my domain be transferred right now?
Domains are often protected with a transfer lock to prevent unauthorized or accidental moves. Most registrars enable this by default as a safety measure. While the lock is active, your domain stays secure but cannot be transferred to another provider.
What steps do I follow to remove the transfer lock?
To unlock your domain, log in to your current registrar’s dashboard and locate the domain security or transfer settings. From there, you can disable the transfer lock. If the option isn’t visible or you’re unsure where to find it, your registrar’s support team can assist, or you can contact us and we’ll guide you through the process.
I disabled the lock, but the transfer still won’t start. What’s the issue?
Certain domains are restricted from transfer due to registry rules. If your domain was registered or transferred within the last 60 days, ICANN regulations prevent it from being moved. Reviewing your domain’s registration date or contacting your current provider can help confirm whether this restriction applies.
The duration depends on the domain extension:
- .ca domains are typically processed quickly after approval
- International domains like .com, .net, and .org may take up to five days to complete, depending on registry processing times
If you’re also migrating hosting, website file transfers may take a bit longer depending on file size. In most cases, your content is available on the new server within an hour.
Can I edit my domain settings while it’s being transferred?
No. A transfer only changes the registrar managing your domain, it does not affect the domain name, website files, or email services.
However, to maintain security during the transfer, some actions are temporarily restricted, including:
- Updating WHOIS or registrant details
- Changing nameservers
- Renewing the domain
Once the transfer finishes, you’ll be able to manage these settings again.
What information do I need to start a domain transfer?
To begin the transfer, you will need:
- Your domain name
- The authorization (EPP) code issued by your current registrar
These details confirm ownership and allow the transfer to proceed securely.
I’m not sure who my domain provider is what should I do?
No worries. You can use a WHOIS lookup service to see which registrar currently manages your domain. If you’d rather not figure it out on your own, our support team is happy to help identify the provider and explain the next steps.
Are there any rules or limitations for transferring domains?
Yes, there are a few standard requirements to keep in mind:
- Some country-code domains may need additional verification or paperwork (we’ll assist you if needed)
- Domains must be registered for at least 60 days
- Domains cannot be transferred if they are expired or within 15 days of expiration
